In 2021, Degewo decided for the first time to inform new tenants of the asbestos hazard

degewo makes 180 degree turnaround

What's going on at Degewo? For decades, the Management Board has been convinced that tenants should be in the dark about the risk of asbestos. Frank Bielka saw no need to inform tenants about the asbestos hazard back in 2000 (or before). In January 2020, the former press spokesperson announced Paul Lichtenthäler on ARD:

"That's - with asbestos I always think it's a question of balance between causing hysteria or panic or unrest, let's call it unrest or sensible information. If I tell people to leave the floor alone, don't drill holes in the wall, please stick to it, because, well, if you keep to that, then you can live there safely. Then I think that's honestly enough."

And then, one year later (2021), the following suddenly and unexpectedly happens

"Degewo rents out flats with built-in asbestos in Schöneberg for a limited period of time. Tenants must undertake not to drill holes in the walls."

"A spokeswoman (Sabrina Gohlisch?) of Degewo confirmed that "time-limited rental agreements are currently being developed which, among other things, contain an additional agreement with a reference to firmly bound asbestos in the flats and the necessary handling of it"

How have new tenants earned this favour from Degewo?

Degewo has finally realised that it is better not to expose tenants to a potential asbestos hazard. It's hard to believe. Why it took Degewo 28 years to do this (asbestos has been strictly banned in Germany since 1993), is a mystery to us.

But is Degewo really concerned with "the health of our tenants", as Ms Sandra Wehrmann has recently formulated?
