Degewo has been secretly renovating flats contaminated with asbestos for years. In our apartment block in Graunstraße, flats were also renovated without our knowledge. Refurbishment companies are instructed to keep quiet about this so as not to worry tenants.
The secrecy is typical of degewo.
"In an anonymous email, "vulnerable tenants at Demminer Straße 7" complain about an "unannounced asbestos removal, hidden under the dust cloud of a string renovation", as the email to the "media people" states. Asbestos clouds were "blown around the ears" of the residents in the building.
According to degewo, the dust cloud has nothing to do with asbestos. If work is being carried out without personnel decontamination systems (personnel air locks) and material decontamination systems (material air locks), then there is a very real risk of asbestos fibres escaping into the residential building and endangering the tenants.
