The Turin asbestos process - Part 2

"The criminal proceedings against Eternit include the offences of involuntary manslaughter and negligent bodily injury as well as the offences of environmental pollution and negligent failure to take occupational safety measures."

"Eternit's policy, which during our many inspections always tended to contradict or ridicule voices that pointed out the harmfulness of asbestos or even that it could be carcinogenic."

"Prosecutor: Did the Eternit company ever change its mindset towards providing the public with better information, especially on asbestos issues?

Witness: But no, not at all. As I said before, Eternit's policy always tended to deny everything."

Degewo works here according to the same scheme as Eternit

Degewo has made itself liable to prosecution by concealing the asbestos hazard for tenants for several decades. When the landlord is asked about possible asbestos contamination, he carefully avoids the word "asbestos" and consistently refers to it as a pollutant. The danger is trivialised. Asbestos remains a taboo word for degewo to this day (March 2019). The company's own website contains no specific information on the subject of asbestos, even though 17,000 degewo rental flats are contaminated with asbestos.

The majority of tenants have been groping in the dark for decades.

The consequences: Non-smokers contract lung cancer because they live in a degewo rented flat contaminated with asbestos without realising it. Many only learn about the asbestos hazard by chance. Many die unaware of it.
